Engineering firm rises in national rankings

Mobile, Ala.-based Hargrove Engineers and Constructors, who have offices in Savannah and other cities, has improved its standing in the Engineering News Record’s (ENR) sourcebook.

Hargrove ranked in the top 20 in several specific industry categories, including pulp and paper, chemical plants and refineries and petrochemical plants.

The ENR Sourcebook ranked Hargrove sixth for pulp and paper, the first year this category has been broken out separately.

Moving up in ranking to 11th in chemical plants, Hargrove held steady at 18th in the refineries and petrochemical plants category while increasing its revenue from $21.6 million to $27 million over the previous year

In May, ENR ranked Hargrove 135th in its top 500 design firms list, 40 spots higher than in 2012.

ENR’s annual national rankings are based on design firms’ total revenue.

Tourism council schedules luncheon

The Savannah Tourism Leadership Council will hold a “TLC Connection” luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 15 in the Harbor Ballroom at the Westin Hotel.

The program will feature Joe Marinelli, president of Visit Savannah, who will share information on how it brings in guests and the benefits of the tourism industry to the local economy.

The cost is $30 for council members and $40 for non-members.

Traffic Club to hear insurance exec on Obamacare

The Savannah Traffic Club will continue its monthly lunch-and-learn series Aug. 13 at Crosswinds Golf Club with Harry S. Lowe as the featured speaker.

Lowe, an insurance executive with Dallas-based BenefitMall will discuss the latest news on implementing the new federal health reform law and what it means to individuals as an employee or employer.

Lowe’s firm handles more than $5 billion in annualized benefit premiums.

He will discuss questions such as what health insurance premiums will look like on Jan. 1 and understanding “pay or play.”

A meet-and-greet will begin at 11:30 a.m., with lunch served at noon. The cost is $25 for members, $35 for non-members. Reservations and payment may be made online at savannahtrafficclub.org.

Tax-free weekend coming for back-to-school supplies

Georgia’s tax holiday will go into effect just in time to coincide with back-to-school sales.

The state’s two-day sales-tax-free weekend begins Friday morning and ends at close of business Saturday.
