The Greenery recognized for excellence

The Greenery Inc, an employee-owned landscaping company based in the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire, was recently recognized for its landscape maintenance at the Avala Apartment Complex in Savannah Quarters.

Avala Apartments, maintained by The Greenery, won the Savannah Apartment Association’s platinum award for landscape beautification for Best New Community.

Paul Gray, The Greenery’s greater Savannah account manager, said his firm has been maintaining the complex since April 2009. The Greenery maintains the entire common area with special floral displays for enhanced curb appeal at the front entrance and sales office.

Weapons training, exhibition scheduled

Global Tactical Training Group, also known as G-Tac, will hold its “Made in Georgia — Trained in Georgia” exhibition and fair Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the G-Tac training site in Midway.

The event will focus on firearms training, manufacturing and security products.

“Made in Georgia — Trained in Georgia” will bring together Georgia-based firearm manufacturers Advanced Armament Corp., Daniel Defense, Ortiz Custom Guns, Iron Clad Armory and others,” said Gary Glemboski, president and director of G-Tac.

Equipment, kit-gear and ammunition manufacturers who will be represented include U.S. Patriot Tactical, Blue Force Gear and Wolf Ammunition, Glemboski said.

The Expo is free and open to the public.

L.E.A.N. Community Challenge under way

Healthy Savannah has launched the L.E.A.N. Community Challenge, a free 10-week community-wide fitness and weight-loss program focused on healthy lifestyle changes, and teams are forming now.

Chatham County has a 29 percent obesity rate, and physical inactivity costs the community an estimated $1,518 per person per year. That equates to more than $325 Million annually: $88 million in medical costs; nearly $1 million in workers’ comp and $235 million in lost productivity.

Organizers say if 1,000 players join the challenge, get active and remain active it can save the community $1,518,000 annually.

L.E.A.N. has a goal of 250 teams from public, private, big and small organizations with four to six members per team. So far, over 30 teams have signed up.

Ribbon cutting today for farmers’ market

The new Wilmington Island Farmers’ Market will hold its ribbon cutting today at 10 a.m. at the market site at 111 Walthour Rd.

Guest speakers will include Chatham County District Attorney Meg Heap and District 4 Chatham County Commissioner Pat Farrell with the St. Peter’s cheerleading squad on hand for the celebration.
