Benteler Steel/Tube breaks ground in Louisiana

Shreveport, La. — Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Benteler Steel/Tube on Sept. 16 marked the start of construction on the company’s new hot rolling seamless steel tube mill in Caddo Parish, La,, its first manufacturing facility in the U.S.

“Investments like Benteler’s bring high-paying, skilled jobs to our state, as well as continuing education and training programs that will ensure our ability to continue attracting world-class companies to Louisiana,” Jindal said.

The project will create more than 1,000 construction jobs, numerous indirect jobs with suppliers and service providers and an estimated 675 full-time jobs.

The German company, at one time, was considered a probable tenant for the Pooler megasite at Interstates 95 and 16.

Group offers financial help to Savannah residents

Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) Georgia has been OK’d for the Workforce Investment Act in the Savannah area. That means IEC can offer financial help to underemployed and dislocated workers for IEC’s electrical apprenticeship training program.

Apprenticeship classes begin Nov. 5 in Savannah at the Georgia Coastal Center. Unemployed adults age 18 and older, dislocated workers and low-income individuals may qualify for financial aid.

Georgia Tech offers veterans’ training

Georgia Tech Professional Education has launched its Veterans Education Training and Transition (VET2) program and is looking for participants for the November class.

The program, designed to meet the needs of transitioning service members and veterans, was created in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs and is approved for GI Bill funding.

VET2 lasts four weeks and pairs students with local industry partners to facilitate employment after leaving the military.

Daniel Defense will provide 10 paid placement positions for the November class. Deadline for enrollment is Oct. 4.
