Feds give emergency shelter $900,000

Park Place Outreach–Youth Emergency Shelter has received more than $900,000 in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The shelter has received $187,160 per year for three years to fund the Basic Centers Program and an additional $121,654 per year for three years to fund the Street Outreach Program.

The Street Outreach Program identifies and assists runaway, homeless and street juveniles in Chatham County. The program has received funding on and off since 1997.

“The funds will enable Park Place Outreach to continue offering services to help at-risk youth in our community turn their lives around,” said Park Place Executive Director Linda Hilts.

Park Place, located at 514 E. Henry St., provides support for troubled children and teens in Savannah and the surrounding area.

Information to be offered on Obamacare

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Saturday, Connecting Georgians to Coverage will hold a free information event on the Affordable Care Act known as Obamacare at the Savannah Civic Center.

Restaurants collect for Meals on Wheels

The Gaslight Group, which operates four restaurants in Savannah, is collecting donations for Senior Citizens Inc.’s Meals on Wheels program to help feed homebound seniors.

Monetary donations will be collected at B. Matthew’s Eatery, The 5 Spot, Blowin’ Smoke and Abe’s on Lincoln through Dec. 20.

Meals on Wheels suffered funding cuts as part of the government shutdown this fall, losing more than $80,000, of its annual budget.

Currently, the program prepares more than 3,500 home-delivered meals and an additional 700 meals to sites each week in Chatham, Effingham, Bryan, Liberty and McIntosh counties. Nearly 600 seniors are on the waiting list in Chatham county alone.
