International Paper Foundation awards three grants

Savannah Mill’s International Paper Foundation has made final grant awards for 2013. Recipients include Blessed Sacrament School Foundation, $4,950; Memorial Day School, $5,000; and the Fresh Air Home, $1,200.

“Memorial Day School is extremely grateful to International Paper for the grant which helps fund software for our reading program,” said Memorial Day principal Michalle Quarles. “The software provided to our students through this grant allows each child to receive the individual attention necessary to become a stronger reader.”

Karen Bogans, mill communications manager, said the foundation looks forward to supporting organizations that work to make a difference in the community and invest in its children.

The application process for 2014 has already begun. For more information, go to www.ipgiving.com.

Hooters reopens remodeled restaurant

The Hooters restaurant at 4 Gateway Blvd. West in Georgetown has reopened after being closed for remodeling.

The remodeling included what’s described as “a fresh interior and exterior design featuring sleek and contemporary finishes, modernized furniture and technology and a more comfortable dining experience.”

“Hooters is proud to introduce the modern design enhancements to the Savannah community, as they are among the first in the nation to experience the new look,” said Mark Whittle, vice president of franchise development, Hooters of America.

The 3,862-square-foot space seats 153 guests in addition to an outdoor patio with additional seating.

Area gas prices fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Savannah have fallen 9.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.17 per gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 262 gas outlets in Savannah. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.21 per gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Savannah during the past week, prices yesterday were 6.2 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 6.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has increased 0.7 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 3.8 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

“Another downward trend in gasoline prices has emerged as motorists hit the roads in the last full week before Christmas,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan. “Historically, this is about the time of year that gasoline prices hit their yearly lows, but this time around, I have more optimism that prices may move even lower in the next few weeks. As we finish our 2014 forecast at GasBuddy in the near future, we can say that 2014 does offer some relief compared to what we’ll end up seeing in terms of average in 2013, but for the time being, the next week looks to see a continued drop in gasoline prices,” DeHaan said.
