Foundation makes grants to local nonprofits

The Savannah Community Foundation, Inc. has issued a total of $280,000 in grants from the Alan S. Gaynor Fund to eight Chatham County charities.

Gaynor, a lifelong Savannah resident, was an attorney, military officer, state representative, civic leader and philanthropist who died in 2010 and left much of his estate to the Community Foundation to create a fund benefitting Chatham County.

This year’s grants include the following:

• The United Way of the Coastal Empire for the handicap accessible playground project at Forsyth Park sponsored by the Rotary Club of Savannah as part of its centennial celebration;

• West Broad Street YMCA to match a city of Savannah grant for a new gymnasium floor;

• Old Savannah City Mission to buy and install a new walk-in refrigerator-freezer;

• Deep Center, Inc. for a Young Author Project for middle school students;

• Georgia Legal Services for establishment of the “Alan S. Gaynor Elderly Home Protection Project”;

• Jewish Educational Alliance for an audio system;

• Savannah Early Childhood Foundation for six sessions of Early Learning College; and

• Coastal Heritage Society for the Savannah Children’s Museum’s S.T.E.M. program.

The foundation declined to specify the amount awarded to individual nonprofits.

Georgia factories increase activity

ATLANTA — Activity at Georgia’s factories has increased in several ways, according to a survey by Kennesaw State University’s Econometric Center.

The Purchasing Managers Index compiled from the survey rose 1.6 points in December from the previous month to 53.9. Economists believe a reading above 50 predicts growth in the overall economy.

The national index stands at 57.0 after falling 0.3 points.

Among the survey components showing improvement were hiring, commodity prices and the time it takes suppliers to make deliveries.

When the Georgia purchasing managers answering the survey were asked to estimate their plant’s production levels for the next three to six months, 39 percent predicted it would be higher.
