ABC News Anchor to speak at Notre Dame Academy Gala

ABC news anchor and chief national correspondent Byron Pitts will be the keynote speaker at the inaugural Notre Dame Academy Benefit Gala at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Hilton Savannah DeSoto.

Tickets are $75 and include cocktails, dinner, dancing and a silent auction. To buy tickets, call Notre Dame Academy at 912-232-5473.

Pitts joined ABC News in April 2013 after working for 15 years for CBS News, including as a correspondent for 60 Minutes.

He will speak at the invitation of Savannah Bishop Gregory J. Hartmayer, who taught Pitts when he was a freshman at Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore.

In his memoir, Pitts writes that he was functionally illiterate through most of his elementary school years and a stutterer until he was 20. He credits his mother, his grandmother, the Franciscan friars, his coaches and a college professor with helping him get over the shame of his illiteracy and stuttering to go on to become an award-winning journalist.
