Murphy’s Law Irish Pub is saying goodbye to its Congress Street location and jigging down to River Street — just in time for the impending St. Patrick’s Day scrum.
The pub will hold a farewell blowout Wednesday night before packing up and heading a few blocks south to 305 W. River Street. Manager Shelley Lowther said they hope to be reopened in their new spot by the middle of next week.
“We’re certainly excited about it,” said Lowther. “We’re excited about the increase in tourist traffic, but we’re still going to work hard to keep our local clientele.”
The pub opened its doors on 409 W. Congress Street in March of 2006. Even though they had a kitchen, over the years their business model changed, and they became better known as a watering hole than food establishment, explained Lowther.
The pub eventually phased out the menu and stuck with their staples: Irish beers on tap, craft brews and Irish whiskeys.
Lowther said with their current lease coming to an end, it was a good time to look for a space they could fully use and ditch the kitchen.
“After St. Patrick’s Day, we’re going to open up a game room with several pool tables and shuffleboard and foosball,” said Lowther. “It’s about the same square footage except it’s all usable space. So it’s going to seem a lot bigger space from a patron’s perspective.”
She said she hopes Murphy’s Law will serve as an anchor for West River Street and “create a new energy on that end of the street,” much as they did when moving to West Congress seven years ago.
The new location is between Rusty Rudders Tap House and Club 309 West. Formerly a live music venue, Lowther said they will likely look into bringing more bands to the new space.
