Goodwill to open facility in Statesboro
STATESBORO — Goodwill of the Coastal Empire, Inc. will hold a grand opening for its new community Job Connection career center and a retail location in Statesboro at 9 a.m. Jan. 17.
The Job Connection career center will be in the shopping plaza at 812 U.S. 80 next to the store. Job Connection offers free resources and services to employers and job seekers. For example, Goodwill offers applicant screening. Employers can provide Goodwill with job descriptions, and Goodwill can match qualified applicants out of their database for the employer to interview.

GSU named military friendly
STATESBORO — Georgia Southern University has been named a military-friendly school for the second year in a row in the 2013 Guide to Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities published in the December issue of Military Advanced Education magazine.
The survey looked at different areas including the flexibility of online learning options, transfer credit policies and support for military families.
Georgia Southern has staff assigned to assist veterans and provide counseling and also offers a place for veterans to relax and study in the Military Resource Center in the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center. Local business advocates to pick winners
Buy Local Savannah will hold its annual awards luncheon Jan. 24, to present its Buy Local Business of the Year and Buy Local Advocate of the Year awards.
The program also will feature a presentation by Ryan Chandler, vice president of business development for the Colonial Group, parent company of several local businesses including Enmark. Chandler will discuss the role local businesses play in the local economy and his company’s growth history and key factors its rise to international visibility and prominence.
