Justin Timberlake’s tour in support of his new album, “The 20/20 Experience,” is on its way to London, courtesy of the Port of Savannah.

The Georgia Ports Authority, along with logistics partners CargoGroup, OOCL and Hapag-Lloyd, loaded the popular entertainer’s Britain-bound tour equipment — including a 115-foot wide stage that sits atop two rolling towers powered by electric motors — onto the Hapag Lloyd vessel Tokyo Express earlier this week.

Timberlake’s equipment, which is worth $55 million, filled 28 shipping containers.

The Tokyo Express set sail from Savannah on Wednesday.

New distribution center opens

St. George Warehouse Inc., a leading provider of third-party warehousing and related services around the world, has moved into the Savannah market, opening a distribution center in Crossroads Business Park

The new, 160,000-square-foot building is just three miles from Interstate 95, five miles from the I-95 and Interstate 16 interchange and minutes from Georgia Ports’ Garden City Terminal.

Company officials said the facility, which features 28 truck bays, will primarily be used for cross-docking operations, serving medium to large retail customers with large capacity storage, most of it for imported packaged goods, electronics, food and beverages and other commodities.

“It was a natural progression for St. George Warehouse operations to choose Savannah, the fourth busiest port in the U.S., enabling us to better service our local and national clients,” said Anthony Mayor, executive vice president for St. George Distribution Group.

Currently, St. George provides less-than-truckload, full-truckload, and intermodal transportation services through a selection of partners. The company’s future warehouse plans include building the facility into a multi-tenant model, combined with a container freight station operation.

“The Port of Savannah’s strategic location and superior infrastructure enables St. George to cost effectively and reliably deliver goods to nearly half of the U.S. population,” said GPA executive director Curtis Foltz.

St. George operates facilities in California, New Jersey, Texas, South Carolina and Illinois as well as Georgia.

Since 2011, the company has also operated a 45,000 square-foot facility in Atlanta, which links cargo to major shipping destinations such as Memphis, Tenn.; Little Rock, Ark.; and Montgomery, Ala.

GPA Board Chairman Robert Jepson isn’t surprised St. George has chosen Savannah for its latest expansion.

“As the closest port to Atlanta’s four-million-person metro area, with superb rail links to markets like Birmingham, Memphis, Louisville and Charlotte, the Port of Savannah forms a distribution center hub,” Jepson said, adding that, in Savannah alone, more than four million square feet of local warehouse space is available, with an occupancy rate greater than 88 percent.

Senior business reporter Mary Carr Mayle covers the ports for the Savannah Morning News and savannahnow. She can be reached at 912-652-0324 or at mary.mayle@savannahnow.com.
