Savannah Tech team wins ‘skills’ awards

Savannah Technical College students won 12 medals at the 2014 SkillsUSA Postsecondary State Conference held March 13-15 at the Georgia International Convention at Atlanta Technical College.

Savannah Tech students brought home three gold medals: Kelvin Conyers, nursing assisting; Robert Anderson, automotive service technology; Amara Kone’, Rodolfo Hille, Chante’ Bunch, David Jackson and Rodney Johnson, Quiz Bowl.

Silver medals were awarded to Laquanda Jones, cosmetology; Katelyn Cole, early childhood education; Thomas Boyd, first Aid/CPR; and Darryl Lewis, technical computer applications.

Students won bronze medals in five categories: Francisco Pacheco, internetworking; Latasha Campbell, nail care; LeAndra Ortiz, technical computer applications; Yolanda James, nursing assistant; and William Geggatt, welding sculpture.

More than 500 college students take part in the state competition.

Work-based learning subject of lunch and learn

The Richmond Hill/Bryan County Chamber of Commerce will host a lunch and learn at Richmond Hill High School from 11:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15, to update the local business community on the school’s work-based learning program.

Program coordinator Lori Davis says work-based learning experiences can help a student make career decisions, network with potential employers, select courses of study, and develop job skills relevant to future employment.

Humane Society seeks vendors, sponsors

The Humane Society for Greater Savannah is asking for sponsor and vendor support for its 14th annual Doggie Carnival from noon-5 p.m. Sunday, May 4, in Forsyth Park.

The event will include bounce castles, a water slide, cotton candy, popcorn, face painting and contests such as the Pooch Smooch.

All proceeds benefit the Humane Society for Greater Savannah.

Kroger customers support Muscular Dystrophy Association

Customers at Kroger’s Atlanta division stores, which includes 11 outlets in the Savannah area, surpassed the grocer’s $250,000 fundraising goal and donated more than $278,000 from March 16-29 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The annual fundraiser encouraged Kroger customers to purchase $1 or $5 shamrocks to help the MDA send patients to summer camps and provide comprehensive health care, medical equipment, wheelchairs, support services and clinics to those affected by more than 40 forms of neuromuscular diseases.
