Noelani Ogletree is only a day old and already has her first payment on a college saving plan in hand.
Noelani was born at 5:52 a.m. and was recognized as the first baby born on “tax day” at Memorial University Medical Center.
As the first “tax day baby,” Noelani was awarded $1,529 for her college savings from Georgia’s Path2College 529 Plan.
“I feel lucky to be blessed with funds to help my little girl go to school,” said Nikka Torres, Noelani’s mother. “Education is important, and I want her to know that she can have the choice to go to any college she wants.”
Torres just completed her degree and said she understands how hard it can be to pay for an education. Rosalind Jackson, director of Women’s Services at Memorial, said the hospital was pleased to be able to partner with Path2College.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for a family to receive money for college,” Jackson said.
Noelani was the first “tax day baby” recognized by Path2College in Savannah, but Mitch Seabaugh, executive director of the Path2College 529 Plan said he hopes to make it a yearly celebration.
“Tax day is the perfect time for families to look at their financial situation and determine how they can better financially prepare for their future,” said Seabaugh. “And, other than retirement, one of the most significant costs families face is paying for continued education.”
Seabaugh said he hopes Tuesday’s event will remind parents that now is the time to start saving.
“Noelani has a foundation for her future — what a great way to celebrate her birth,” said Seabaugh. “We hope that other families will be inspired to start saving for their children, no matter how young or old. It’s never too early or too late to save.”
