Coldwater Creek stores closing

Coldwater Creek, a chain of upscale women’s clothing stores, has filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy to facilitate an orderly wind-down of its operations and close all of its stores, including one in the Abercorn Walk Shopping Center in Savannah.

Coldwater Creek has not been profitable since 2007, and five months ago announced it was exploring strategic alternatives, including a possible sale.

Coldwater Creek’s stores and website are currently open for business, but the company said it expects to begin liquidation sales in early May.

The Savannah store opened in August 2006 in a 9,000-square-foot location next to Fresh Market in Abercorn Walk. The target audience for Coldwater Creek was women between 30 and 60 who earn an average of $70,000 a year.

The 30-year-old company operates 334 retail stores, 31 factory outlet stores and seven day-spa locations, as well as a catalog and an online business.
