Folk art gallery scheduled to open today
Roots Up Gallery, a new regional and folk art gallery located on the second floor at 6 E. Liberty St., will open for business today and will host a grand opening celebration from 6-9 p.m. May 9. The event is open to the public.
“Traditional regional and folk art are rooted in the art of traditions that come from the local community and culture,” said co-owner Francis Allen. “I believe that art of this type is very often the genesis of the creative spirit and is a great opportunity to express the shared community values and aesthetics of the South.”
For their grand opening, Roots Up Gallery will debut new art from Abigail Thomson, Bailey Davidson, Betsy Cain, Georgia Kyle Shiver, Harriet Speer, Jeff Ziegler, Joshua Beckler, Karen Harvell, Leslie Lovell, Matt Hebermehl, Panhandle Slim, Tex Slim, Rebecca Sipper, Rudolph Valentino Bostic and Meryl Truett.
Artists Howard Finster, Willie Tarver, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Charley Kinney, Hazel Kinney and Missionary Mary Proctor also will be featured.

‘Maximum money’ training offered in Richmond Hill
In partnership with the University of Georgia’s Small Business Development Center, the Richmond Hill-Bryan County Chamber of Commerce Chamber will offer the Maximum Money Training Series each Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 7 through June 4 at the chamber offices, 2591 U.S. Hwy. 17, suite 100.
Maximum Money will provide training to help business owners strengthen their business finances. Cost is $50 for chamber members, $75.00 for non-members.

Will-A-Palooza to benefit Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
On May 10, Coach’s Corner along with Will Gruver’s campaign team for man-of-the-year will host the innaugural Will-A-Palooza. Money raised from noon to 10 p.m. will go to Gruver’s man-of-the-year campaign to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s effort to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
The event will include live bands and a cornhole tournament.
Tickets are $15 for general admission or $50 for a cornhole team of two.
Farmers market to hold Lowcountry boil
The Wilmington Island Farmers Market will hold its second annual Lowcountry boil from 7:30-11 p.m. Saturday at the Morningstar Marina–Bahia Blue in Thunderbolt.
