Dr. James Burke, a gynecologic oncologist who has been practicing at Memorial University Medical Center’s Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute since 1996, has been named the first Donald G. Gallup Endowed Scholar at the institute.
Burke also is the director of gynecologic oncology and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Mercer University School of Medicine, Savannah campus.
The endowment was established in honor of Dr. Donald G. Gallup, a gynecological oncologist who practiced at the institute prior to his death in 2011.
Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson had begun the endowment prior to Gallup’s death, and friends and colleagues have contributed to it since then.
The endowment will pay for education, research, equipment and programs at the institute.
Gallup was known for his expertise in gynecologic oncology, his dedication to and compassion for his patients and his commitment to training the next generation of practitioners in the field of gynecologic oncology.
Maggie Gill, Memorial’s president and CEO, described Gallup as “someone who gave countless hours to the care of thousands of women and someone who worked tirelessly to share his knowledge with others.”
Gallup’s widow, Dr. Pam Gallup Gaudry, along with the Gallup children, Savanna, Jonathan and Kelly, attended the presentation ceremony.
