ATLANTA — Tourism demand generated $53.6 billion in business sales, including direct, indirect and induced impact in Georgia in 2013, up 4.5 percent, according to the U.S. Travel Association and Tourism Economics.

“After surpassing $50 billion in 2012, we are now building on that momentum as Georgia continues to attract more visitors year over year,” said Chris Carr, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

Carr said tourism sustainedmore than 411,000 jobs and made up 10.2 percent of all jobs in the state.

Wednesday’s report indicated Georgia’s visitor impact stands 18 percent higher than its pre-recession level in 2007. In 2013, visitor spending generated $2.8 billion in state and local tax revenue in Georgia.

“Georgia’s tourism destinations continue to add new attractions, accommodations and events,” said Kevin Langston, deputy commissioner of tourism for the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

Georgia named most competitive state

Site Selection magazine has named Georgia as the number one most competitive state in the nation.

“These rankings are not only a testament to our strong business climate, but they also speak to the commitment and support from our industry partners, communities and the people of Georgia,” said Gov. Nathan Deal.

The magazine releases its Top 10 Competitive States each year in May. The ranking is based on an index of 10 criteria, most of which are tied to new projects and expansions tracked by Site Selection’s New Plant Database.

Site Selection ranking gave Georgia 426 points — 12 more than the 414 that won last year’s first place. Last year, Georgia ranked as the nation’s third most competitive state and has been in the top 10 since 2010.
