Gas prices drop slightly in Savannah
Average retail gasoline prices in Savannah have fallen 2.4 cents a gallon in the past week to $3.61 a gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 262 gas outlets in Savannah.
The national average fell 1.8 cents a gallon last week to $3.62, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
Prices Sunday were 25.4 cents a gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 2.6 cents a gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 2.9 cents a gallon during the last month and stands 4.9 cents a gallon higher than this day one year ago.
“The national average by Memorial Day will be between 5-10 cents per gallon lower than today, which would represent a nice decrease over where gasoline prices were on Memorial Day 2013,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan.
Japanese firm to open headquarters in Spalding County
Japan-based Otsuka Chemical Co. Ltd. will establish its North American headquarters in Spalding County and create 32 jobs, Gov. Nathan Deal announced Monday.
The project was initiated during Deal’s mission to Asia in 2013. The Otsuka Chemical America Inc. headquarters will be located on a 35-acre site within The Lakes at Green Valley industrial park on Ga. 16.
The facility will manufacture titanate friction materials for automotive brake pads, an extension of the company’s existing chemical production businesses and one that it intends to expand in the United States.
Otsuka Chemical Co. Ltd. is a diversified Japanese chemical manufacturer that offers products for a wide range of applications, including the automotive, construction and pharmaceutical industries.
The location of the Otsuka Chemical America headquarters and manufacturing facility is considered the first eco-park in Georgia and resulted from a partnership between the Griffin-Spalding Development Authority and Georgia Tech.
Gulfstream expands student program to Glynn County
Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., in partnership with the Glynn County School System, has expanded its Student Leadership Program education initiative to Glynn County public high schools to serve the community surrounding Gulfstream’s Brunswick facility.
Gulfstream established the program in 2008 through a partnership with Savannah-Chatham public schools with the goal of increasing graduation rates and preparing students to be future leaders.
That program has grown to include more than 600 students and 120 community advisers. The graduation rate for the program was 97 percent in 2013.
The program will begin when school starts in the fall of 2014.
