Mall to host small business mentoring, startup session

In recognition of national small business week, Savannah Mall will hold a “how to start a business” information session Friday in the food court from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

SCORE, The Entrepreneurial Center and the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension-County Extension Agency will be available for free business consulting and mentoring.

“We have 41 locally owned and operated businesses, which equates to 49 percent of the businesses.” said Becky Orsi, marketing and specialty leasing manager at the Savannah Mall. “We are committed to helping local small businesses succeed, which is why we invited SCORE and UGA representatives to help our community.”

More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year.

Savannah exec to make presentation in Singapore

Al Kennickell, president of the Kennickell Group, has been asked to make a presentation to the International Print Network Global meeting in Singapore the week of May 19.

The IPN is an international organization of print providers who work together to serve multinational corporations with their print and distribution needs. Kennickell will discuss how to best utilize technology to maximize global partnerships in worldwide print distribution.

The Kennickell Group has developed system that allows companies with worldwide sales offices or dealers to supply those dealers or offices with printed marketing material produced in the region where they are needed and not shipped from overseas.

The Kennickell Group maintains an 80,000-square-foot direct mail and fulfillment center and a 45,000-square-foot commercial sheet-fed printing operation in Savannah,

Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute awarded grant

Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute has been awarded a National Science Foundation grant aimed at training undergraduate students, particularly veterans, in the fundamental principles of advanced manufacturing science and technology and entrepreneurship.

The program will provide technical training, entrepreneurship and research experience for 10 students each summer. The students will learn manufacturing techniques as well as how to work with new technologies.

The program is recruiting students nationwide and hopes to attract transitioning military veterans as well as underrepresented minorities.

Students will have to be in Atlanta for the summer and will be provided support for travel expenses, a $5,000 stipend and on-campus housing. The program is set to begin May 27.
