Settlement reached in housing discrimination complaint
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Fair Housing Alliance, the Austin Tenants’ Council and the National Association of the Deaf have announced the settlement of complaints regarding apartment complexes owned and operated by Bell Partners in Savannah and Austin, Texas.
The agreement comes after a nationwide investigation resulting in the filing of nine complaints with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development against several apartment owners and managers, of which Bell Partners was one. The investigation by NFHA and several of its member agencies involved more than 715 complexes with 174,000 units.
Bell Partners was the first company to come to the table and is entering a collaborative relationship with NFHA and its co-complainants to deter future discrimination. Funds from the settlement will be used for fair housing activities ($150,000) and an anti-discrimination training program ($15,000) for rental staff and management at Bell Partners. NFHA also will be reimbursed its legal fees ($25,000).
Memorial on state group’s honor roll
Memorial University Medical Center has been named to the Georgia Hospital Association’s Partnership for Health and Accountability Core Measures Honor Roll.
Memorial is one of 23 hospitals to be placed in the presidential category. The honor roll is based on clinical data provided by the federal Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services and collected from October 2012 to September 2013.
“Compliance with these important core measures ensures that every patient receives the best, most effective health care possible,” said Earl V. Rogers, president of the hospital association.
Maggie Gill, president and CEO of Memorial Health, said the honor is a tribute to the health system’s doctors and team members.
“We work hard every day to ensure that our patients receive effective, evidence-based care. This recognition … reinforces that we are doing the right thing,” Gill said.
