Ribbon-cutting held for Spartina store

BLUFFTON, S.C. — Spartina 449’s Flagship Store, 32 Calhoun St., held its official ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony Thursday on its front porch at the Bluffton Farmer’s Market.

The official ribbon was pieced together from a selection of pattern swatches from Spartina 449 linen handbag collections since 2009.

Bluffton Mayor Lisa Sulka and Old Town Bluffton Merchants Society marketing director Mary O’Neill officiated. Also on hand were Cathy Tyson of Wine & Design and representatives of the Greater Bluffton Chamber of Commerce and the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce.

Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

Program will turn Georgia Southern plastic into clothes

Georgia Southern University and its College of Business are partnering with Renew Merchandise, a company that turns recyclables into clothes, to begin offering Georgia Southern licensed apparel made from recycled plastic bottles.

Renew Merchandise takes recyclable plastic bottles and turns them into various products, including T-shirts, polos, uniforms and other consumer goods. The company builds sustainability programs for universities, professional sports teams and the Olympic Games.

Its five-step process begins with collecting plastic bottles and later turning them into yarn to be used to produce merchandise.

Companies using the products include Ford, McDonald’s and the Atlanta Braves.

This summer, College of Business classes will start the branding phase of the project, and a graduate-level strategic marketing management class will develop a marketing plant this fall

Lissa Leege, director for the GSU’s Center for Sustainability, said the program will “close the loop to transform our ‘waste’ into T-shirts, hats, and fleece to outfit the Eagle Nation.”
