It’s a scenario many have dreamed about but few have actually encountered — what to do after stumbling upon a large sum of money lying on the ground.
Wilmington Island resident Lauren Rossi faced just such a situation Monday when she pulled up to the island’s SunTrust branch.
“I was in the drive-thru at SunTrust depositing some checks and I went to put my money in the slot and I had to open my door and looked down and saw a big stack of cash — like big stack of cash,” said Rossi.
Without thinking twice about it, Rossi took the money, $1,000 to be exact, and turned it over to the teller. The stack had a deposit slip attached to it for the customer who had driven away.
The teller thanked Rossi for her honesty and went back to her usual Monday duties.
Kay Ford, market president of SunTrust, said the customer later returned to pick up the money and was very appreciative.
“Believe it or not, this happens quite frequently,” said Ford. “We are blessed with good and honest people in our community.”
Rossi later posted her “good deed of the day” to Facebook and racked up 50 likes and several positive comments from friends. Some shared their own stories of finding unclaimed money and the guilt associated with keeping it.
Rossi said she’d found stray money before but never more than $1. Although the old “finders, keepers” adage is often employed in such situations, Rossi said she wouldn’t hesitate to do the same again.
“Definitely if I were to find a wallet, I would contact that person,” she said.
