Atlantic Coast Financial reports quarter’s results

JACKSONVILLE — Atlantic Coast Financial Corp. (NASDAQ: ACFC), the holding company for Atlantic Coast Bank reports earnings per share of $0.02 for the second quarter ended June 30, continuing a profitable trend from the first quarter of 2014.

“Our second quarter results demonstrate that Atlantic Coast is making steady headway toward its long-term goals, and our dedication to improving our product base and expanding our reach within the local community is helping to lead the way,” said John K. Stephens, Jr., president and CEO.

Highlights included: Net income improved to $0.2 million from a net loss of $1.5 million or $0.62 per diluted share for the year-earlier quarter.

Net income improved to $0.4 million or $0.03 per diluted share for the six months ended June 30, versus a net loss of $3.6 million or $1.43 per diluted share and an adjusted net loss of $2.3 million or $0.91 per diluted share for the same period in 2013.

Nonperforming assets decreased 63 percent to $9.4 million or 1.33 percent of total assets at June 30, from $25.2 million or 3.40 percent of total assets at June 30, 2013.

 

Georgia Southern now 100 percent tobacco-free

STATESBORO — Georgia Southern University is 100 percent tobacco free as of today, school president Brooks Keel has announced.

“This includes all indoor and outdoor areas that are owned and leased by the university, including but limited to, all buildings and facilities, outdoor areas, stadiums, parking lots and vehicles on campus,” Keel wrote an email to faculty and staff.

The move comes after a March vote by the Georgia Board of Regents to ban the use of tobacco products on property owned, leased, rented or in the possession of the University System of Georgia.

The rules applies to students, faculty, staff, contractors and their subcontractors and employees, spectators and visitors.


Great Harvest bakes special dog treats

During August, Great Harvest Bread Co. at 7360 Skidaway Road will donate a percentage of its proceeds from its whole grain dog treats to benefit the Humane Society of Greater Savannah and fund an Operation New Hope class.

Operation New Hope is a partnership between the Chatham County Sheriff’s office and the Humane Society for Greater Savannah designed to help rehabilitate inmates and shelter dogs. Six dogs that have shown a need for specialized, hands-on-behavior modification are placed with inmates in a 4-week training program.

The bakery is open from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
