SHERRY CORTES

Duties: Cortes is the reference assistant at GHS and provides support to research center staff. She assists with patron research requests and research center operations, helping to ensure the collections of GHS are maintained and available for public use.

Related Experience: She served as a reference librarian in Savannah and interned in the archives at the New-York Historical Society in New York City.

Education: Cortes graduated from Kenyon College with a degree in history, and will receive her master’s degree in library and information science from the University of South Carolina in May.

LORETTA L. HOOVER, PHR

New job title: Director of Finance and Administration

Company: Georgia Historical Society

Duties: Hoover is responsible for the finance, human resource, and administrative functions of the organization. She comes to GHS with nearly 10 years of director level finance and human resource experience. Prior to joining GHS, she worked at an architecture and engineering firm in Pennsylvania.

Education: Hoover received her bachelor’s degree from Central Pennsylvania College and an MBA from York of College of Pennsylvania. She also holds the Professional in Human Resources certification from the Society of Human Resources Management.

KELSI DURRENCE

New job title: Administrative Assistant

Related experience:

She comes to GHS with seven years of experience as an executive assistant at Ambassador Animal Hospital and nine years as a Family Court Case Manager and Family Financial Mediation Coordinator with the Cumberland County District Court Judges’ Office in Fayetteville, NC.

Education: Durrence has a bachelor’s in business administration from Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C., and is currently working on a dual master’s degree in organizational behavior and management from Colorado State University.

SAUDA GANIOUS

Ganious is responsible for providing reference services to patrons. She handles patron research requests and assists in managing and providing access to GHS collections.

Related experience:

Ganious worked as a library assistant in the Collection and Resource Services Department at the Zach S. Henderson Library at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro and as an archives intern at GHS.

Education: Ganious holds an Associate of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from The University of Phoenix, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Art from The Savannah College of Art and Design, and is a candidate for the master of science degree in library and information science, with a concentration in archival studies, from Drexel University.

TOM HASSETT

New job title: Chief Operating Officer

Coastal Home Care, Inc.

Duties:

He will provide leadership in the strategic planning process and manage the operational aspects of the annual budget.

Related experience:

He most recently served as the vice president of corporate operations at Carolinas Health Care System in Charlotte, the third largest non-profit public system in the country. In the mid-1990s, Hassett was executive vice president and chief operating officer with Candler Health System in Savannah.

Education: Hassett has his undergraduate degree from Georgia Tech and a master’s degree in health administration from Georgia State University.

ISAAC FELTON

New job title: Chatham Apprentice Program Manager

Step Up Savannah

Duties: Felton will plan and manage Step Up Savannah’s workforce development program. He will also collaborate with various community centers and groups to bring job training to unemployed or underemployed in Chatham County.

Related experience:

Felton served as the Chatham Apprentice Program Coordinator, during which he served alongside the former CAP Manager. He also has experience as an educational and substance abuse counselor with the Chatham County Drug Court Program and as an adjunct instructor at Savannah Technical College.

MELODY RODRÍGUEZ

New job title: Director of Lumina Community Partnership for Attainment Program

Rodríguez will be based at Armstrong State University and will lead Savannah’s initiative to support post-secondary education completion and workforce development through the Community Partnership for Attainment grant supported by Lumina Foundation.

CECIL ‘ROCK’ MCCASKILL

New job title: Registrar

Armstrong State University

Duties:

McCaskill serves as the university’s academic records officer and is responsible for managing the daily operations of the Office of the Registrar and Veterans Affairs.

Related experience: McCaskill served as the university registrar at Southern Wesleyan University for 13 years, where he provided strategic planning, direction and leadership to the Department of Academic Records. He was responsible for budgetary oversight, planning and assessment, development of policies and procedures, implementation of the student information systems, and planning and coordinating all academic convocations, including commencement. Additionally, he served as the Primary Designated School Official for F-1 international students.

Education: He earned a master’s degree in public administration and a bachelor’s in agricultural mechanization and business from Clemson University.

Local Businessman Receives CLU Designation

Christopher Snider of Northwestern Mutual received his Chartered Life Underwriter designation from the American College. With a CLU designation, Snider has achieved the highest level of studies in the life insurance profession.

Northwestern Mutual awards Forum Membership

Northwestern Mutual is honoring Savannah financial representative Richard Geriner Jr, CLU® with membership in its 2014 Forum group, which recognizes individuals for an outstanding year of helping clients achieve financial security. Geriner is affiliated with The Koch Group based in Jacksonville, Fla. This is the eighth time that Geriner has received the Forum honor.

On July 22, Metropolitan Savannah Rotary inducted Chris Corey.

Brand named Education Fellow

Gary Brand, of Brand Ferland Advisors, has been named an Education Fellow of the Institute of Global Entrepreneurship at Florida State University, one of the 10 largest business schools in the nation. His role includes speaking before entrepreneurship class students, judging student business plan competitions and consulting with business owners.

South University students win Medical Challenge Bowl

The South University, Savannah Master of Science in Physician Assistant Class of 2016 took first place in the Medical Challenge Bowl at the recent Georgia Association for Physician Assistants conference. South University beat teams from Emory University, Mercer University and Georgia Regents University for the win. The Jeopardy-style question and answer competition involved teams of two from each University vying for the title during two rounds of questioning and a final question. Master of Science in Physician Assistant students Cody Belk and Stephanie Knutson made up South University, Savannah’s winning team.

Savannah lawyer earns mediation certification

Business attorney Charles Bowen of The Bowen Law Group has been approved by the Georgia Supreme Court to register with the Georgia Commission on Dispute Resolution as both a General Civil Mediator and a Domestic Relations Mediator. Bowen completed all civil and domestic training requirements in order to be approved and qualified to mediate almost all civil and domestic disputes. By procuring his certification with the Georgia Commission on Dispute Resolution, Bowen is eligible to handle both private mediations as well as court-ordered cases. In addition, this certification grants him the authority to formally adopt the Georgia Supreme Court Alternative Dispute Resolution Rules as the procedural and ethical framework for his mediation practice. Wendy Williamson, Executive Director of The Mediation Center of Savannah, conducted the majority of Bowen’s training.

UGA’s Terry College of Business appoints Martin to board

Tony Martin is a new member of the Alumni Board of Directors at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. He is one of 13 new members to join the 60-member alumni board. He was appointed to a three-year term of service on the board that began July 1. Martin, of Savannah, has been a leader in the business community for more than 15 years. He joined Martin Financial Group in 2001 and helped cofound M3 Advisors in 2014.
