South State Corp. reports 3Q earnings

South State Corp. (NASDAQ: SSB) released its unaudited results of operations and other financial information for the three months ending Sept. 30.

Highlights include net income available to common shareholders of $19.3 million, up 7.7 percent from the second quarter, operating earnings of $24.2 million, up 9.1 percent from last quarter and 28.3 percent from last year and return on average assets of .96 percent, up from .66 percent in 2013.

South State also executed its system conversion related to the First Financial merger, rebranding of all its branches to South State Bank — including those in Savannah — and declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.22 per share payable on its common stock.

“Our third quarter results were highlighted by operating return on tangible equity exceeding 17 percent, operating return on average assets of 1.21 percent and a year over year increase in operating earnings of 28.3 percent,” said Robert Hill Jr., CEO of South State. “Our team has done an outstanding job with our merger and branding integration that was completed during the third quarter.”

Adult counseling practice opens in Savannah

Julie Rubin McGaughey, a licensed professional counselor, has opened a new adult counseling practice, Atlantic Coastal Therapy, at 5 Oglethorpe Professional Boulevard, Suite 220.

McGaughey has a bachelor’s degree in education from the College of Charleston and a master’s degree in professional counseling from South College.

Her practice will provide counseling for men and women as couples, individuals, and groups for addiction, anger management, co-dependency, coping skills, depression, divorce/separation, family conflict, grief, life transitions, obsessive compulsive disorder, parenting, relationship issues, self-esteem, substance abuse and trauma (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

Veterans’ career expo to be held Nov. 7

Savannah Technical College and the Georgia Department of Labor will co-sponsor a career expo for veterans and other job seekers from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 7 in the college’s Eckburg Auditorium, 5717 White Bluff Road.

On Wednesday, the college and the labor department will co-sponsor a Veterans Appreciation Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Room 7228 of the college’s Academic Commons Building.

Labor department staff members will conduct job readiness workshops for veterans, including: market yourself using social media, job search, resume preparation, interviewing skills and dress for success runway.

The expo will feature about 50 employers, educational institutions, and resource agencies that provide assistance to veterans and other job seekers.
