Children’s Hospital receives $43,940 grant

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven and donor-centered charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research, has awarded a one-year $43,940 grant to The Children’s Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center.

The grant is one of 40 infrastructure grants awarded as part of the foundation’s fall grant cycle, which totals more than $2.5 million.

Money from the foundation will help sustain the pediatric oncology nurse navigator at Children’s Hopsital and will enhance clinical trial services for their pediatric oncology patients.

Hospice offers 2015 pet calendars

The 2015 Hospice Savannah Pet Calendar is on sale and its available for a $15 minimum donation to The Pet Peace of Mind program, which helps patients and pets stay together and finds pets a “forever” home.

Calendars are available during regular business hours at Hospice House, 1329 Eisenhower Drive, and from Hospice Savannah’s administrative offices at 1674 Chatham Parkway. They also are available at Case Veterinary Hospital, 111 Eisenhower Drive, and TailsSpin in Habersham Village.

Sewing academy expands, relocates

Gentleman Jim’s Sewing Academy, formerly known as the Savannah Sewing Academy, has relocated to 7 E. DeRenne Ave. inside 34 x 37 Fabrics in the Globe Shopping Plaza.

“In my 53-plus years of being a master tailor, I have moved my shop 14 times. I’m hoping this will be my last move,” said James “Gentleman Jim” McFarland.

He said he needed more space and better parking. The new facililty has a 2,000-square-foot studio equipped with conventional and industry equipment and supplies.

McFarland teaches individual and group lessons to students of all experience levels in addition to multiple-day workshops.

Clinic donates cash, supplies to Ronald McDonald House

Dr. Corinne Howington, with Low Country Dermatology, has presented a check for $1,000 and several wish-list items collected from patients and community members to the Ronald McDonald House of the Coastal Empire.

Howington presented the check to Bill Sorochak, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House, along with laundry detergent, cleaning supplies and gift cards for residents of the house.

“Since the holiday season is right around the corner, I asked my patients and community to help me spread a little cheer to these deserving families,” Howington said.

The donation was presented during the unveiling of the new Low Country Dermatology sign displayed outside the office at 310 Eisenhower Dr.
