Enmark wins national community service award

Enmark Stations Inc. has been selected to receive the 2014 Spirit Award for Community Outreach from Convenience Store News.

The awards program, in its sixth year, recognizes convenience retailers involved in community service projects.

Enmark, which operates 64 stations in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina, won in the small chain category.

Enmark has supported a number of local charitable organizations, including America’s Second Harvest Food Bank, Salvation Army, Chatham-Savannah Citizen Advocacy, United Way, the YMCA and others.

In May, Enmark Stations raised $76,097 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Enmark Stations also presented the 2014 Encourage Health Educational Series.

“Enmark has always had an interest in giving back and contributing to the overall health and wellness of the communities in which we operate, but this award would not have been possible without the support and involvement of our customers,” said Houstoun Demere, vice president of Enmark Stations.

Jones Street among 10 best for a stroll

USA TODAY, in its Travel section, has listed Jones Street in Savannah among its “10 Best: Prettiest Southern streets for a stroll.”

Writer Lena Katz described Jones Street this way:

“Like the consummate Southern belle, this street appears in every regional and national beauty contest, and often wins. Live oaks festooned with Spanish moss tower over the cobblestone street. Flowerbeds and perfectly trimmed hedges neatly border historic carriage houses – everything in seemingly perfect condition.

The B&B crowd has always gravitated to Jones Street for its beautiful little inns housed in historic buildings, surrounded by galleries and antique shops. Lately, in social media channels, it’s started to garner a Pinterest following with the same aesthetic.”

Grants support new Hospice program

Hospice Savannah, Inc., has received two grants – one for $8,000 and another for $1,500 – for the Edel Caregiver Institute under construction off Chatham Parkway.

Slated to open in the summer of 2015, the institute will offer support to those living with a chronic or life-limiting illness, their caregivers and their families. It will offer intake coordination, consultations with medical residents, care-giving classes and training, disease-specific education, self-care and wellness classes and social work and anticipatory grief support.

The United Way of the Coastal Empire gave the institute an $8,000 grant to hire a part-time intake coordinator in early 2015. A $1,500 mini-grant from the National Alliance for Caregiving will pay for an event to raise the visibility of challenges facing family caregivers who balance work and caring.
