Business in Savannah in brief

Magazine ranks McGuireWoods Consulting Georgia’s top lobbying firm

ATLANTA – McGuireWoods Consulting was recently ranked first among “Top Governmental Affairs Firms, Law-Firm Affiliated” in James magazine’s annual rating of Georgia lobbyists and lobbying firms.

The rankings were published in the magazine’s October/November 2014 issue.

The firm’s government relations team includes Savannah resident Eric Johnson, a former state senator and Republican candidate for governor.

Recognized for their individual accomplishments were vice presidents Brian Looby and Misty Holcomb, who were among the “top lobbyists for associations.” Holcomb and Ashley Groome, a senior vice president of State Government Relations, were named “top female lobbyists.”

Robert Fortson, a vice president of state government relations, was named among the “rising stars.”

“This is a tremendous achievement and honor for our team and is directly attributable to the time and hard work put in by our staff on behalf of our clients,” said Brad Alexander, senior vice president and head of the Georgia government relations team.

Armstrong State named to STEM list

Armstrong State University has been designated a 2015 STEM Jobs Approved College by Victory Media and will be featured in the winter 2015 issue of STEM Jobs magazine. Armstrong was one of 123 schools nationwide to be named as a STEM Jobs Approved College.

The list is the first of its kind to rate universities, colleges, community colleges and trade schools on their responsiveness and relevance to high demand, high growth science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) occupations.

“The College of Science and Technology at Armstrong has a strong track record of providing students with research and internship opportunities that lead to employment in their field after graduation,” said interim dean Brent Feske.

Armstrong was among more than 1,600 schools to participate in the STEM Jobs survey process that measured how effectively schools align their programs to high-demand, high-paying STEM jobs and how well they assist their students in achieving career aspirations in STEM fields.
