The Italian Society of Savannah has launched the Frank Finocchiaro Memorial Scholarship Essay Contest for juniors in Benedictine Military School and St. Vincent’s Academy.
A $1,000 scholarship, applicable toward senior year tuition, will be awarded to the author of the best essay from each school.
A news release from the organization said the program is being established in the memory of Frank Finocchiaro, a founding member of the Italian Society of Savannah and a Benedictine alumnus, Class of 1944, as well as to promote an appreciation of Italian arts, science, culture, heritage and contributions to our nation.
Essay Topic: Select a person of Italian descent and write an essay to describe their significant contribution to the United States.
Contest Rules: Students are invited to submit their essays of approximately 750 words to the guidance office by March 13, 2015.
An evaluation committee comprised of Italian Society members will select a winner from each school. The judges will consider the depth of thought, the quality and presentation as well as the development of the ideas.
Theme and exposition carries most weight, but command of vocabulary, sentence structure and spelling will also be considered.
Winners will be announced by April 15, 2015.
