Local gas prices drop almost 8 cents
Average retail gasoline prices in Savannah have fallen 7.9 cents a gallon in the past week to $2.15 gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 262 gas outlets in Savannah.
The national average has fallen 7.7 cents a gallon in the last week to $2.19, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
Prices Sunday in Savannah were $1.18 cents a gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 50.3 cents a gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 52.8 cents a gallon during the last month and stands $1.13 cents a gallon lower than this day one year ago.
“2015 will be a far better year at the pump than what we saw in 2014, and motorists will fare substantially better, shelling out $96 billion less this year at the gas pump with motorists in most states seeing far more $2 gas than $3 gas,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy.
Cleveland State University coming to help
Cleveland State University will join Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity this week for the first Collegiate Challenge of the year.
Habitat for Humanity will host seven collegiate challenge groups this calendar year. These include University of Missouri, Wheaton College and Salve Regina University.
“Collegiate Challenge is a year-round alternative break program that allows students to get a group together to assist others building homes in a community,” said Michael Weathers, Habitat’s executive director.

Child abuse center elects new officers
Coastal Children’s Advocacy Center, which provides free services to children who have been sexually or severely physically abused or witnessed violence, has elected new officers for 2014-15.
They are: John Tuggle, assistant director for public services, Live Oak Public Libraries, president; Kate Blair, director of development and communications, Step Up Savannah, vice president; Nancy Montford, Savannah Drywall, secretary; Gerry Long, community volunteer and retired Savannah-Chatham police major, treasurer; Shannon Brett, Holland, Henry & Bromley, assistant treasurer; and Kathy Gruver, Memorial Health social worker, immediate past president.
Continuing board members are Ulysses Bryant, retiring chief, Campus Police; Matthew H. Folan, DMD; Meg Heap, Chatham County District Attorney; Lester B. Johnson III, The Law Firm of Lester B.
