Contract awarded to build school on Marine base
BEAUFORT, S.C. — A $35.7 million contract has been awarded to Elkins Constructors, of Jacksonville, Fla., to build a new elementary and middle school at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.
The contract calls for the demolition of the existing Bolden school and construction of a two-story elementary and middle school.
“The existing facilities were built in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Replacement is more economical than continued maintenance and repair of these aged facilities,” said Col. Peter Buck, commanding officer of the base.
The school will include an information center, flex labs, gymnasium, performance spaces, commons/dining, and a kitchen along with specialist rooms, an art room, music and band rooms, science labs and space to support special education.
The initial project is expected to be completed by October 2017.
