Business in Savannah in brief

Ga. Tech, Gulfstream help vets transition

Beginning this week, active duty military members no longer have to wait until they leave the service to train for work in the civilian world, thanks to a partnership between Gulfstream Aerospace and Georgia Tech in Savannah.

As part of Georgia Tech’s Veterans Education Training and Transition — VET2 — program, Gulfstream is sponsoring three active duty soldiers in a four-week internship training program at no cost.

Participants will spend this week in the classroom and the following three weeks with the aerospace manufacturer, earning a certificate they can add to their resumes.

The VET2 program, which began 16 months ago, is the first of its kind in the country. For more information, call James Wilburn, military academic program director for Georgia Tech Professional Education, at 912-966-7951

Estate of late Gov. Sanders donates to Georgia Southern

STATESBORO — The Georgia Southern University Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art has received a $500,000 gift from the estate of former Georgia Gov. Carl E. Sanders.

The gift will support academic initiatives for visual art and design students, exhibitions, merit-based projects, competitions and innovative curriculum development.

“This gift shows the unrelenting support that Gov. Sanders had for education and the Arts at Georgia Southern. We are honored to be able to continue exemplifying academic excellence in the arts, and we are extremely thankful for his dedication and service to the state of Georgia,“ said university President Brooks A. Keel.

Sander’s wife, Betty Foy Sanders, is a native of Statesboro and a Georgia Southern graduate.

“Betty and Gov. Sanders have previously supported the Department by establishing separate endowments for visiting artists, student travel and scholarships,” said Robert Farber, department chair.
