JASPER COUNTY, S.C. —
Jasper County is one step closer to bringing in new businesses and jobs.
SouthernCarolina Alliance and Gordon Construction, Inc. had a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday afternoon for a new industrial building at PointSouth Commerce Park in northern Jasper County. The 50,000-square-foot building will have a 30-foot ceiling to accommodate both manufacturing and distribution operations. The building will be expandable to more than 100,000 square feet.
SouthernCarolina Alliance President and CEO Danny Black said the building will help boost the economy and potentially bring more jobs.
“Jasper County’s location, with I-95 and easy access to the ports of Charleston and Savannah, creates a perfect situation for manufacturing, assembly and distribution,” Black said in a news release. “However, many companies are looking for existing buildings as a way to shorten their startup time and to begin operation more quickly.”
He said an expandable industrial building, which can be finished to suit the company, is ideal for attracting these companies.
Black said the Alliance has leads on prospective businesses for the venue.
“The building is going to be built specifically for a cluster of opportunities, either manufacturing or processing, and we’ve already put together a marketing plan to start doing some of that,” Black said.
Jasper County councilors Marty Sauls, Henry Etheridge, and Chairwoman Barbara Clark spoke at the groundbreaking along with Hardeeville Mayor Bronco Bostick.
“We are pushing for economic development anywhere in the region, Jasper County, Hampton County. The best way to increase the quality of life is get them a job,” Bostick said. “That’s what we’re about. And being a board member on the Southern Alliance, we’re in seven different counties, and we want to continue working to bring jobs in all the areas.”
It will take several months to complete the building, which is being marketed by SouthernCarolina Alliance.
Phil Richardson, Jasper County’s economic development director, said prospective businesses have begun visiting the site.
“It’s going to be great now to actually have a building to bring people to and they can actually see it, so that’s going to help a lot,” Richardson said.
Richardson said they hope to start clearing trees on the property and begin construction around mid-February. The building is scheduled to be finished by late summer.
