Business in Savannah in brief

Women’s race raises $43,000 to fight cancer

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training program received more than $43,000 through donations and participant fundraising as the official charity of the Publix Savannah Women’s Half & 5K.

The race took place March 28 along with other related events over the weekend.

“We are grateful to the Savannah Sports Council for choosing LLS as the charity partner of the inaugural event,” said Jennie Brewster, campaign manager for LLS. “The funds and awareness raised through this event will further research and patient services for blood cancer patients.”

More than 2,300 people participated in the race, with 42 women raising money and running as a part of Team in Traning.

Survey: Savannah most expensive destination in Georgia

Savannah is the most expensive destination in Georgia for travelers, according to a survey from TravelMag.com that compared the cost of lodging for 20 popular destinations.

The survey established the amount an overnight guest will have to spend to stay in the least expensive room, on average, during April and May 2015. Only hotels or inns rated at least three stars and those well located in relation to their respective city center were taken into account.

Savannah was at the top of the rankings with an average nightly rate of $192 for the least expensive double room.

Tybee Island came in second with an average price of $164 per night. Saint Simons Island was third with an average nightly rate of $143.

Augusta ranks among the least expensive destinations in the state, but it gets pricey for the Masters golf tournament. TravelMag.com’s Nicole Haney said hotels in and around Augusta are raising their rates by 200 percent to 300 percent during the Masters. For a hotel rated at least three stars, an Augusta visitor will have to spend at least $200 per night during the tournament.

SSU OK’d for in-state rates to border states

Savannah State University has been approved to offer in-state tuition rates to residents of border states, including Florida, Alabama and South Carolina.

Savannah State University is one of ten institutions approved for the waiver. The program is in place for the next three academic years, and students who enroll under the waiver can keep in-state tuition rates for the duration of their studies as long as they meet eligibility requirement.

The waiver begins with the fall 2015 semester. For more information, call 912-358-4338.
