Quantum Inc. is looking for a few good logistics providers.
Actually, it’s hoping to find more than a few to introduce them to what this special company can do.
A nonprofit subsidiary of the Coastal Center for Developmental Services, Quantum is dedicated to creating high quality, sustainable jobs for adults with disabilities through the development of viable commercial business ventures and partnerships.
Housed at CCDS on Eisenhower Drive, Quantum has a long and successful track record of delivering high-quality, cost-effective outsourcing options to companies throughout the greater Savannah area.
On Wednesday, the staff and Quantum supporters will host an open house in hopes of introducing logistics companies to all the possibilities Quantum offers.
“We’re really excited about this,” said Wanda Bohnstedt, vice president of operations for Quantum. “The Savannah logistics industry has grown tremendously with our ports and we think now is a great time to showcase our services to them.”
In its 20,000-square-foot, climate-controlled warehouse, Quantum provides product supply chain services, including sub-assemblies, parts manufacturing, kitting, sorting and labeling, order fulfillment and quality testing. Other services include bulk packaging and palletizing, repackaging and shrink wrapping.
They also offer off-site services.
“If you have a large project that can’t be outsourced to us, we can come to you,” Bohnstedt said. “We send a group of six to eight workers specifically selected to meet your needs, along with one full-time staff member to supervise the group project at your facility.
“This has worked very well for several companies.”
The open house will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Quantum, 1249 Eisenhower Drive and will include a presentation
by Emily Schrenk, industry coordinator for the Georgia Center of Innovation for Logistics, a tour of Quantum facilities and lunch.

‘Largest ship ever’ returns
If you missed it, the Zim Tianjin was back in port this week, less than a month after its well-documented arrival as the largest ship ever to call on the Port of Savannah.
At it did in March, the Tianjin — which at 1,145 feet long and 150 feet wide is capable of carrying more than 10,000 TEUs, or 20-foot container units — sailed in light-loaded and on a high tide.
Four huge ship-to-shore cranes and the corresponding number of longshoremen gangs from ILA Locals 1475 and 1414 worked the ship Wednesday and Thursday, moving a total of 3,044 containers — up from the approximately 2,000 boxes moved during the Tianjin’s first visit in March.
According to the shipping schedule, the Tianjin came to Savannah from Kingston, Jamaica. It sailed shortly after noon Thursday, headed to the Port of New York/New Jersey.
Maritime Bethel gets grant
The Maritime Bethel at Savannah was recently presented with a $1,000 grant by Schneider Logistics’ warehouse advisory committee, a group formed this year and made up of employees working at Schneider Logistics’ Port Wentworth warehouse facility who assess applications and allocate a proportion of the company’s charitable funds.
The grant was presented to Andy Krey, chaplain and executive director of the bethel, which provides personal and practical support to seafarers who come into the Savannah port on big ships from all over the world.
Located just outside the Garden City Terminal gates, the bethel is a faith based non-profit organization that includes advocacy, spiritual, physical and emotional support although they are not affiliated to any one church or denomination.
Terrence McDuffie, facility manager at Schneider and chairman of the committee, told Krey his group was impressed with the bethel’s work.
“We appreciate your organization doing this much-needed work to help the people who travel in and out of our port every day and who often get forgotten,” McDuffie said.
Senior business reporter Mary Carr Mayle covers the ports for the Savannah Morning News and savannahnow. She can be reached at 912-652-0324 or at mary.mayle@savannahnow.com.
