Society of Toxicology honors former Landings resident
The establishment of a permanent endowment fund to honor the achievements of Dr. Donald E. Gardner was announced at the 54th annual meeting of the Society of Toxicology in March in San Diego.
Gardner lived at the Landings and was a member of the Rotary Club of Savannah South before his death in October.
He was a graduate of Creighton University and spent more than 50 years in the field of toxicology.
Gardner’s research is credited with generating more than 250 scientific articles that expanded the understanding of health risks of air pollutants and promoted the health of workers and the public.
More information on how to make a contribution to the fund can be found at: http://www.toxicology.org/AI/CSOT/specific_funds.asp. The Society of Toxicology will match all contributions.
Georgia Southern dorms designated crime free
STATESBORO — Georgia Southern University has received a crime-free housing designation from the International Crime Free Association Inc. after officers completed training for the designation and because initiatives were implemented to create safer environments in on-campus residence halls.
The safety initiatives were implemented by University Housing and Facilities Services with support from the Office of Public Safety.
“For students who choose to live on campus, this designation means they’ll live in facilities that have enhanced physical security that off-campus housing may not offer,” said officer Charles Bowen.
To receive the new designation, residence halls were required to meet certain design standards. Door frames, door peep holes and lighting were among the safety points that were addressed during the year it took to ensure all the standards were in place.
University housing also “meets or exceeds” the standards set forth, including the use of security camera systems used by the Office of Public Safety with the help of Network Telecommunications.
