Georgia Southern receives green building award

STATESBORO — Georgia Southern University was granted the Georgia Peach Green Building Award by the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission for its new Biological Sciences Building, which meets the agency’s green building rating system.

“This building is the first of this magnitude, and the goals were to make it as sustainable and environmentally-sensitive as it was economically-feasible,” said Bonnie McMakin, project architect for facilities planning, design and construction.

The Peach Certification was established by the Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Construction Act of 2008.

The Biological Sciences Building was built using 60.3 percent Georgia-based materials and by using low-flow faucets, sinks and toilets. The building uses 40 percent less water than with standard fixtures.

Humane Society receives grant from BISSELL Pet Foundation

The Humane Society for Greater Savannah has announced it received a $10,000 grant from the BISSELL Pet Foundation to support the ongoing collaboration between the Humane Society and Savannah Chatham Animal Control.

The Humane Society accepts owned pets while animal control is responsible for stray animals. They work together to help reduce the number of homeless dogs by transferring more dogs to the Humane Society where they can more readily find new homes.

Dogs and cats in the care of the Humane Society receive all their vaccinations and are spayed or neutered in preparation for adoption.

“We are grateful for the generous grant from the Bissell Pet Foundation that allows us to transfer more dogs”, says Lynn Gensamer, executive director. “Our goal is to transfer 300 dogs in 2015, an increase of 42 percent.”
