New cooking school to open Tuesday

Chef Darin Sehnert, the former cooking school director of the 700 Kitchen Cooking School at the Mansion on Forsyth Park, will open his own school next week.

Sehnert’s school, Chef Darin’s Kitchen Table, will celebrate its grand opening from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at 2514 Abercorn St., suite 140-150. Participants will work in a 1,000-square-foot teaching kitchen around five dual-fuel KitchenAid ranges while preparing menus centered on regional cuisines, seasonal features and technique.

The grand opening will include interactive food stations, price specials, door prizes and technique demonstrations by Chef Darin at 6:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

St. Joseph’s/Candler wins stroke treatment award

St. Joseph’s/Candler has earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award.

The award recognizes that St. Joseph’s/Candler patients receive high quality stroke treatment techniques as recommended by the heart association. Both St. Joseph’s Hospital and Candler Hospital earned the award.

St. Joseph’s/Candler has invested in technology that allows neurologists to remotely diagnose and treat stroke patients in seven rural hospitals in southeast Georgia.

To receive the award, St. Joseph’s/Candler achieved 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Performance Achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with six of eight quality measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.

St. Joseph’s/Candler doctors have treated more than 1,600 stroke patients in the region since 2009.

Nominations sought for golden broom awards

Savannah’s Downtown Redevelopment Authority is inviting citizens to submit nominations for its second quarter Golden Broom Award. Each quarter, the Golden Broom Award recognizes a business in Greater Downtown Savannah that goes above and beyond to keep the area in front of their business clean and litter-free.

Businesses must be between River Street and Park Avenue, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to East Broad Street. They also may be on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Montgomery Street Corridor from River Street to 52nd Street.

Winners are honored at a ceremony with an official Golden Broom, prizes and bragging rights.

Ellsworth-Hallett Home Professionals was recognized in the first quarter of 2015.
