General Dynamics, parent company of Savannah-based Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., has announced that Gulfstream President Larry R. Flynn has informed the company that he will retire June 30 for health reasons.
Mark L. Burns, president of Product Support for Gulfstream, will succeed Flynn as president July 1.
Flynn, who has been Gulfstream’s president since September 2011, notified the company of his decision earlier this year.
Phebe N. Novakovic, chairman and CEO of General Dynamics, expressed the company’s support of Flynn’s decision and appreciation for his service.
“Larry Flynn has made significant contributions to General Dynamics and Gulfstream during his long career, most recently with the introduction of three new aircraft in 2014. Under his leadership, he has positioned Gulfstream for continued success as a global leader in the business jet market,” Novakovic said.
Flynn, 63, was named president of Gulfstream in August 2011 and a vice president of General Dynamics in October 2001. He joined Gulfstream in 1995 as vice president of aircraft services. He had been senior vice president of marketing and sales from 2008 to 2011 and president of product support from 2002 to 2008.
Flynn has a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in manpower management from the University of Kansas.
Burns has led Gulfstream’s Product Support organization since June 2008, and became a vice president of General Dynamics in February 2014. Prior to being named Product Support president, Burns was the vice president of customer support for six years and vice president of completions engineering for two years. He joined Gulfstream in 1983.
General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) also announced that Joseph T. Lombardo, executive vice president of the company’s Aerospace group, is retiring at the end of June. The companies that comprise the Aerospace group will report directly to Novakovic.
The firm had announced in February that Flynn would succeed Lombardo, but that was prior to his decision to retire.
