Silver Airways has discontinued its advertisements for the airline’s direct flights from Savannah to Orlando and is postponing the service.
Lori Lynah, director of marketing and air service development with Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, said a representative from Silver Airways called Tuesday and said the airline would not be starting the service at the previously agreed date.
A new date has not been set, and Silver Airways has postponed the service until further notice. The flights were scheduled to start June 23, and the company is currently reaching out to customers and providing refunds.
Promotions offered one-way tickets from Savannah to Orlando for $89.
Misty Pinson, director of public relations and communications for Silver Airways, said the airline monitored bookings and market performance for the direct flights and found the market does not support a new route right now.
“We will continue to focus on our core markets in Florida, the Bahamas and Dulles as we concentrate on growing in a controlled and profitable manner,” Pinson said.
Savannah/Hilton Head was getting the airport ready to begin the flights with Silver Airways, but there have not been any major changes, so Silver’s decision will not affect the
general public.
Lynah said airport officials are disappointed they will not be able to offer the service since it would have been an important link for visitors as well as a boost to Savannah’s economy and tourism.
The original decision to expand service to Savannah was supposed to provide a link for Savannah to Orlando and allow travelers to continue to the Bahamas.
With this change, the airport will continue without any direct flights to Florida as has been the case since 2011 when American Eagle stopped flying from Savannah to Miami.
