Kroger customers donate to children’s hospitals
Children’s Miracle Network hospitals across Georgia, South Carolina and eastern Alabama will receive a donation of more than $302,900 from customers of Kroger’s Atlanta Division stores, including 11 in metro Savannah.
Savannah-area customers’ contribution of more than $19,169 will benefit the Children’s Hospital at Memorial University Medical Center, the local affiliate of Children’s Miracle Network.
Kroger’s annual two-week philanthropic initiative benefiting Children’s Miracle Network sought to raise $250,000 through customer purchases of $1 hot-air balloon icons, known as “Miracle Balloons,” from May 17–30.
“Kroger customers are incredibly generous in supporting our charitable initiatives, as well as their communities,” said Kroger spokesman Glynn Jenkins.
Children’s Miracle Network, one of the world’s leading children’s charities, is a nonprofit organization that raises money for more than 170 hospitals nationwide.
Memorial picked to Join baby-friendly hospital initiative
Memorial University Medical Center has been selected to join the Enhancing Maternity Practices (EMPower) breast-feeding initiative.
EMPower Breastfeeding is a hospital-based quality improvement program in which hospitals can earn Baby-Friendly USA designation for meeting 10 breast-feeding standards established by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. The goal is to increase breast-feeding rates throughout the United States and improve public health.
“The 10 breast-feeding standards include things such as having a written breast-feeding policy, having staff members who can teach new moms how to breast feed and teaching all moms about the health benefits of breast feeding,” said Karen Boyer, vice president of patient care services at Memorial. “Our leadership team is committed to this initiative, and we’re pleased to share this important information with new families.”
