ReStore to celebrate birthday

The Habitat ReStore will hold an open-to-the-public birthday celebration March 9 at the store at 1900 E. Victory Drive in the McAlpin Square shopping center.

Habitat for Humanity Savannah opened the home improvement store in 2010 to provide salvaged or new home accessories, building materials and appliances at a fraction of retail prices.

A children’s clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where they can design their dream home. Their parents and others can enter to win door prizes or enjoy free refreshments.

A 30 percent discount will be offered on items sold in the ReStore during the celebration.

Virginia Brown, executive director of the Habitat for Humanity Savannah, said the birthday celebration will be a gift to a loyal consumer base.

Wells Fargo grant supports financial literacy

Mercy Housing Southeast, a nonprofit organization retained to provide financial literacy training to residents of Savannah Gardens, has received a $5,000 grant from Wells Fargo to support its resident services program.

The money will ensure that Savannah Gardens’ 300-plus residents have access to financial education. Wells Fargo also has provided residents with its financial education curriculum called Hands On Banking.

“If people don’t know how to live within a budget or save, they will never be able to secure their financial footing,” said Jenny Gentry, local market president for Wells Fargo. “We are proud to support Mercy Housing’s efforts to educate their residents and help them improve their financial situations.”

Mercy Housing serves families and seniors earning less than 60 percent of the area median income.

“By using Hands On Banking and other educational resources, these residents can work to create a stable foundation and build secure financial futures,” said Jane Graf, president of Mercy Housing Inc.
