Yet another company has chosen Georgia Ports Authority’s Garden City Terminal as its major port of entry, establishing new distribution center space in Savannah’s Foreign Trade Zone.
Dukal Corp., a leading supplier of disposable medical products, has contracted for 140,000 square feet of space on Tremont Road in Savannah, less than 6 miles from the port and close to Interstates 16 and 95. The warehouse has a 32-foot clearance and 126 dock doors.
Falcon Transport will handle drayage — the short-haul trucking — from the port to the warehouse.
“Our new central distribution center in Savannah will provide closer proximity to our customers at reduced container rates and lower distribution costs,” said Travis Torre, director of logistics for Dukal.
Curtis Foltz, GPA executive director, agreed.
“Dukal’s decision to locate its East Coast distribution center in Savannah puts the company in a prime location to more efficiently reach one of the fastest-growing markets in the nation,” he said.
Dukal joins a growing number of cargo owners who have located here. The port’s logistics network includes two Class I railroads — Norfolk Southern and CSX — on terminal, a hub of available distribution center space and two major interstate highways.
Savannah also has the advantage of being the western-most port on the East Coast.
“Georgia’s logistics network of road, rail and ocean transport is unsurpassed in the United States,” said GPA Board Chairman Robert Jepson. “Cargo handling at Georgia’s deepwater ports in Brunswick and Savannah sets the industry standard in efficiency and cost effectiveness.”
Dukal has contracted with third party logistics provider OHL Transportation Management to run the distribution center. The Dukal location is OHL’s first foray into the Savannah market, although the 3PL is well established in Atlanta.
OHL has a companywide network of 32 million square feet of warehouse space.
The Savannah operation will serve everything east of Texas and northwest to Montana, Torre said.
