Deadline near for ‘kids who care’ nominations

Kids Who Care is a program designed to salute high school seniors who have made a positive difference in the lives of others by volunteering. Five $1,000 college scholarships will be awarded to local seniors from the Lowcountry area in recognition of their outstanding volunteer service and outstanding community involvement.

These scholarships are not based on academic or athletic ability. The Junior League of Savannah has asked for help in identifying Kids Who Care by nominating high school seniors who have been active volunteers.

Nominations may be made by anyone — principals, counselors, students, community groups and individuals, as well as self-nomination by the student. Visit the Junior League of Savannah website at www.jrleaguesav.org (under Community Impact) for more information and to complete the application.

Application Deadline: March 15. For more information, contact Melissa Holland Wedincamp at melissajholland@gmail.com.

Nation’s top retirement areas include Savannah

Savannah has moved into the top 100 places to retire in the U.S. according to the 2013 list of best places to retire compiled by the website Topretirements.com.

Savannah was number 71 on the organization’s seventh annual list, just behind Mesa, Ariz., and ahead of Mount Airy, N.C.

Asheville, N.C., was number one, and Beaufort, S.C., ranked number six.

The website’s writers said the reaffirmed the growing popularity of retirement in the Sunbelt, which accounted for 76 spots.

“Our list is essentially a popularity contest. It reflects the towns that visitors to this ‘find your best place to retire’ website are most interested in for retirement. The list was compiled by calculating the 100 towns that receive the most online visits of the 900-plus cities reviewed at Topretirements.com during the last six months of 2012,” Topretirements’ writers explained.

Athens, at number 61, was the only other Georgia city in the rankings. Hilton Head, S.C., was ranked number 90.
