Local hospice wins seal of approval

Hospice Savannah Inc. has earned a Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission — the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care — for meeting national standards for health care quality and safety.

Hospice Savannah has earned the designation each year since 1998. It recognizes excellence in standards of care specific to the need of patients, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.

“Attaining certification is a voluntary process that demonstrates our commitment to providing the highest level of care,” says Debra Anthony Larson, president and CEO. “It shows we are making a significant investment in quality on a day-to-day basis from the top down.”

Founded in 1951, the Joint Commission conducted an unannounced, on-site evaluation of Hospice Savannah in February. The nonprofit services hospice patients in Chatham, Bryan, Effingham, Liberty and Long counties. More information can be found at www.hospicesavannahhelps.org.

Hunter Cattle wins Flavor of Georgia Award

Hunter Cattle Co. of Brooklet has won first place in the meat product category of the University of Georgia’s Flavor of Georgia competition.

This annual statewide event took place at the Georgia Freight Depot in Atlanta during the governor’s annual agricultural awareness week. Food products from across the state are judged and critiqued by a panel of food experts.

Entries are judged based on flavor, best use of Georgia ingredients, Georgia theme, unique or innovative qualities, commercial appeal and originality.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as having a great product. We work very hard to produce healthy, high-quality food — in this case our pork sausage,” said Del Ferguson, who works the farm with his wife, Debra, and two children.

Hunter Cattle pasture raises beef, pork, lamb, poultry and eggs and handcrafts the meat products in the family farm store.
