A team of artists has spent the last five days working on a 75-ton sand sculpture in the center court of the Savannah Mall.
Work on the sculpture, which features a summer animal theme, will continue through Thursday.
Patrick Harsch, an artist with Florida-based Team Sandtastic, which creates about 55 sand sculptures a year, oversaw work pack and built the sand forms and began the actual sculpting over the weekend.
Only sand and water are used; no cement or fixatives are mixed in.
The sculptors use a variety of tools, including margin trowels, spreaders, cake decorator spatulas and even dental instruments.
In July of 1998, for Georgia Stone Mountain Park, Team Sandtastic created a sand castle that stood 28 feet and 7 and one-quarter inches tall. It still holds the Guinness record for the tallest sand castle ever hand built in under 100 man hours.
Sandtastic also was chosen as Walt Disney World’s “Disney Institute” sand sculpting team.
