This week in BiS:

• Wanda Beckett, otherwise known as “Ms. Polly” is the owner, baker and cake decorator at Ms. Polly’s Cake Giants where she decorates and sculpts cakes. Her favorites? Sour cream pound and red velvet.

• The Chocolate Lab on DeSoto Avenue is where you’ll find Kelly Spivey, who describes herself as an artisan candy bar maker. She uses organic, local and fair trade ingredients, nothing artificial.

• Accountant W. Edward “Eddie” Scott suggests now that the dust almost has settled on the 2012 tax filing season, it is time to focus on new tax changes for 2013.

• Attorney Sarah Lamar updates a proposed federal rule that would have required most U.S. employers to display a written notice informing workers of their right to form a union and bargain collectively.

• Maritime businesses should take time to understand the obligations federal laws place on them, especially in the area of minimum wages and overtime, according to Todd M. Baiad, who specializes in maritime law.

Gas giveaway contest launched

Parker’s convenience stores have launched a free-gas-for-a-year giveaway contest that will run through July 31.

Parker’s will randomly select one winner each day from cars displaying the “I Love Parker’s” bumper sticker. Daily winners will be awarded a $50 Parker’s gas card.

One grand prize winner will be selected at the end of July to win free gas for a year at Parker’s.

Winning license plates will run in the Savannah Morning News daily throughout the month and are announced daily on the stores’ Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ParkerSav.

Parker’s operates 30 convenience stores across the region with plans to open additional locations in Chatham, Bryan, Liberty, Effingham, Bulloch, Jasper and Beaufort counties.

Firm raises money for Park Place Outreach

Mingledorff’s, a Savannah-based independent HVAC wholesale distributor, held a golf tournament on May 24 with all proceeds going to Park Place Outreach — Youth Emergency Shelter.

Rob Massey, Mingledorff’s southeast general manager, and Brian Phillips, Mingledorff’s territory manager, presented a check for $3,120 to Linda Hilts, executive director of Park Place Outreach on July 1.

“Mingledorff’s very generous donation will help Park Place Outreach fulfill our mission of supporting youth who are in crisis,” Hilts said.

Business after hours in Beaufort

BEAUFORT, S.C. — The Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce will hold a business after hours from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday.

The Callawassie Island Club is hosting the event at the Callawassie Island River Club, 201 Callawassie Drive, Callawassie Island. The event is free and open to the public.
