Gas prices surge in metro Savannah

Average retail gasoline prices in Savannah have risen 22.4 cents a gallon in the past week to $3.53 a gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 262 gas outlets in Savannah.

The national average increased 11.7 cents a gallon in the last week to $3.62, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Prices Sunday were 32.6 cents a gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 12.4 cents a gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 0.4 cents a gallon during the last month and stands 19.5 cents higher than this day one year ago.

“I suspect that the unrest in Egypt is playing a significant role in pushing crude values higher, and thus retail gasoline prices higher as well,” said GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan.

New hotel to be Marriott Fairfield Inn

A hotel planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard just north of Oglethorpe Avenue will be a Marriott Fairfield Inn, with construction to begin early next year.

The six-story, 137-room hotel is scheduled to open in spring 2015. The property will be developed, owned and managed by local hoteliers Anil and Kirit Patel and their HOS Management company.

The Patels own several other Savannah-area hotels and are developing the Cotton Sail Hotel in the historic Ryan Building on Bay Street. That property will open in November 2013.

The Savannah Historic Board of Review approved plans for the Fairfield Inn on Wednesday. The hotel was first announced back in February and was then known as the Hotel Lina. It will be built on the vacant lot once home to an Econo Lodge demolished in 2007.
