Gulfstream awards $250,000 in scholarships

Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. has awarded more than $250,000 in scholarships to 17 children of employees at the company’s sites in California, Georgia, Massachusetts, Texas and Wisconsin. The students were recognized at special events at each company site.

Each year, children of Gulfstream employees who plan to attend an accredited educational institution or technical school can compete for one of four annual scholarships: The Gulfstream Goldie Glenn Scholarship, the Susan and Fred Breidenbach Scholarship, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Scholarship and the Gulfstream/Rolls-Royce 50th Anniversary Scholarship.

Scholarship winners from Georgia are as folows:

The Gulfstream Goldie Glenn Scholarship:

Rachel Conlee, a graduate of St. Vincent’s Academy in Savannah, will attend the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta to study industrial engineering.

Shouron Ghassemlou, a graduate of Savannah Country Day School, plans to attend the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., to study medicine. Ghassemlou also received a Gulfstream/Rolls-Royce 50th Anniversary National Merit Scholarship.

Ly Nguyen, valedictorian of Richmond Hill High School Class of 2013, plans to attend Rice University in Houston to major in biological sciences.

Grant Shillington, a graduate of Savannah Country Day School, will attend Washington University in St. Louis to study environmental sustainability and French.

Tony Tran, a graduate of Johnson High School in Savannah, will attend the University of Georgia in Athens to major in biology.

The following students were awarded the Susan and Fred Breidenbach Scholarship:

Phong Tran, a graduate of Windsor Forest High School in Savannah, plans to attend Emory University in Atlanta to pursue a profession in the medical field.

Sarah Windeknecht, a graduate of Savannah Christian Preparatory School, will attend Mercer University in Macon on the premed track.

The following student won the SCAD Scholarship:

Jordan Meyer, a graduate of Whitewater High School in Fayetteville will study abroad at SCAD’s location in Lacoste, France.

The following students won the Gulfstream/Rolls-Royce 50th Anniversary Scholarship:

Shouron Ghassemlou, a graduate of Savannah Country Day School, plans to attend the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va., to study medicine. Ghassemlou also received a Goldie Glenn Scholarship.

In addition to the scholarships given to children of Gulfstream employees, a special scholarship was made available this year to help a student pursue an engineering degree.

The Pres Henne Youth Apprenticeship Scholarship for Engineers commemorates the career of Pres Henne, retired senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream.

The following student received the scholarship:

Morgan McDaniel, a graduate of Effingham County High School, will study mechanical engineering at Georgia Southern University this fall.
