Former Visit Savannah exec opens agency

Melissa Yao, former chief marketing officer for Visit Savannah and the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, has opened My Agency, a full- service advertising and marketing firm.

Yao will serve as the “chief experience officer” for the agency at Suite 100, Southern Oaks Boulevard off Chatham Parkway.

Clients include Visit Tybee, Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, Savannah Sport Council, Savannah Lodging, Hyatt Regency Savannah, Simons Political Group and others.

“I have dreamed about opening my own advertising agency for years,” Yao said. “I have a passion for connecting businesses with a smart marketing strategy that works for them.”

Katie Dye Tait, former director of communications with Abshire Public Relations and past director of marketing of the Savannah Economic Development Authority, has also joined My Agency.

My Agency will host a grand opening and open house from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday.

Parker’s to sponsor Picnic in the Park

The city of Savannah has announced that Parker’s convenience stores, for the second consecutive year, will be the sponsor for Picnic in the Park 2013 from 4-9:30 p.m. Oct. 6 at Forsyth Park.

Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson said the city is “deeply grateful” for Parker’s continued support.

This year’s picnic will feature live music beginning at 7:15 p.m. with The Savannah Philharmonic and special guests with artistic director and conductor Peter Shannon.

A creative picnic contest hosted by Savannah Area Realtors will register picnic contest entries beginning at 4 p.m., with the judging at 5 p.m. Winners will be announced at intermission.

“We’re delighted to sponsor Picnic in the Park again this year,” said Greg Parker, president and CEO of Parker’s. “We enjoy giving back to Savannah and are truly honored to support this iconic cultural event.”

Thrift store accepts applications for grants

The St. Thomas Thrift Store is accepting requests from area nonprofits for grants, typically about $1,500, to be awarded at the end of December.

Completed applications and supporting documents must be submitted by Nov. 15 with applications available at the St. Thomas Thrift Store, 1126 E. Montgomery Crossroad, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Tuesday and Friday-Saturday. The Thrift Store is an outreach ministry of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Isle of Hope. All proceeds benefit area charities, youth organizations and missions.
