Historic district retailers to host special events
From 5:30-8:30 tonight, the Downtown Design District will host its annual Holiday Walk.
The district runs along the Whitaker Street corridor between Charlton and Gaston streets. Shopping possibilities include fashion, accessories, antiques, furnishings and other eclectic offerings.
Individual retailers will offer promotions and refreshments.
On Friday night, the Wright Square Merchants’ Holiday Open House will be held from 5-9 p.m.
This is the 12th year for the annual celebration around Wright Square, which is on Bull Street between Broughton Street and Oglethorpe Avenue.
Two historic courthouses and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of The Ascension dominate the east and west sides of the square, but numerous unique small businesses can be found along York, State and Bull streets.
Entertainment for Wright Square’s event includes a visit from Father Christmas, a bagpiper, several other musicians and performances by groups from the Savannah Arts Academy, Savannah Christian Preparatory School, Savannah Children’s Choir and the Lutheran Church.
Company to create 420 jobs in Dalton, Rome
Mohawk Industries announced Wednesday it will convert two manufacturing facilities in Dalton and Rome to create 420 new jobs and will invest about $85 million in the two conversion projects over the next two years.
“Mohawk’s expansion in Georgia underscores how a premier flooring manufacturer helps Georgia’s entire floor covering industry remain competitive,” said Gov. Nathan Deal. “Mohawk’s presence here has been a magnet for flooring suppliers and customers, and this expansion reflects the resilience of an industry that supplies more than half of the world’s carpet and rugs.”
The move by Mohawk to align its manufacturing capabilities to meet evolving consumer preferences also will preserve 230 jobs at its facility in Rome.
The Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce helped the company with the conversion projects.
